Level 11 · Lesson 16 चुरादिगणः — चोरयति
The चुरादि class: चोरयति
चुरादिभ्यो णिच् — सनाद्यन्ता धातवः — चोरयति कथयति गणयति।
Class 10 adds णिच्, making a new derived root: चोरयति, कथयति, गणयति.
स्मरणम् · You already know this
पञ्चमस्तरे कथाः कथयति स्म भवान् — ‘सः कथां कथयति'। चुरादिगणे प्रत्येकं धातुः णिच्-प्रत्ययं गृह्णाति; ततः सः नूतनः धातुः भूत्वा शपम् अपि गृह्णाति — द्वौ स्तरौ!
You have been narrating with कथयति since Level 5. Class 10 works in two storeys: first the root takes णिच् (audible इ) and the whole thing is re-baptised as a root (3.1.32); then that new root takes ordinary शप् — hence the -अय- you hear in चोरयति, कथयति.

सत्यादिभ्यः शब्देभ्यः चुरादिभ्यः धातुभ्यश्च णिच् प्रत्ययः।
The long list ends with the part we need: चुरादिभ्यो णिच् — class-10 roots take णिच्. ण् and च् are it-markers; इ remains. Its ṇit-hood licenses guṇa/vṛddhi in the root.
सनाद्यन्ता धातवः
सन्-आदि-प्रत्ययान्ताः शब्दाः अपि धातुसंज्ञकाः।
A stem ending in सन्, णिच् and the other listed affixes is itself called a dhātu. So चोरि is a root — and as a root it takes लट्, शप्, everything.
पुगन्तलघूपधस्य च
पुगन्तस्य लघूपधस्य च अङ्गस्य इकः गुणः सार्वधातुके आर्धधातुके च।
A light (short) penultimate ik vowel takes guṇa before sārvadhātuka/ārdhadhātuka affixes: the उ of चुर् → ओ before णिच् — चोरि.
अतो लोपः
अदन्ताङ्गस्य अकारस्य लोपः आर्धधातुके परे।
A stem-final अ drops before an ārdhadhātuka affix: कथ + णिच् → कथ् + इ. (No vṛddhi of the remaining अ — the deleted vowel still blocks it by sthānivadbhāva.) Hence कथयति, गणयति.
