शिष्टाचारः
Register II: the courtesies of cultured speech

अभिवादनम्, आशीर्वादः, धन्यवादः — शिष्टव्यवहारस्य वचनानि।

Greeting elders, giving blessings, thanking — the etiquette of śiṣṭa Sanskrit.

 देवदत्तः —  गुरुवर्य, अभिवादये। देवदत्तः अहम्। 
Revered guru, I offer my respects. I am Devadatta.  
 गुरुः —  आयुष्मान् भव, वत्स। कुशली असि वा? 
Long life to you, child. Are you well?  
 देवदत्तः —  भवतां कृपया कुशली अस्मि। इदं फलं स्वीकुर्वन्तु। 
By your grace I am well. Please accept this fruit.  
 गुरुः —  स्वस्ति! किमर्थम् आगतवान्? 
Blessings! What brings you here?  
 देवदत्तः —  परीक्षायाम् उत्तीर्णः अस्मि — भवतां शिक्षणस्य एव फलम् इदम्। 
I have passed my examination — the fruit of your teaching alone.  
 गुरुः —  साधु साधु! तव परिश्रमस्य फलम् एतत्, वत्स। 
Bravo! It is the fruit of your own hard work, child.  
 देवदत्तः —  अनुगृहीतोऽस्मि। आज्ञां ददतु, गच्छामि। 
I am deeply obliged. With your leave, I shall go.  
 गुरुः —  शुभं भवतु। पुनः आगच्छ। 
May all be well with you. Come again.  

विवरणम् · Explanation

शिष्टव्यवहारस्य रत्नानि — १. गुरुजनं प्रति “अभिवादये” इति स्वनाम्ना सह। २. आशीर्वादाः — “आयुष्मान् भव” (स्त्रियै “आयुष्मती भव”), “शुभं भवतु”, “स्वस्ति”। ३. कृतज्ञता — “धन्यवादः” इति सामान्यं, “अनुगृहीतोऽस्मि” (स्त्री “अनुगृहीतास्मि”) इति गभीरम्। ४. निर्गमनात् पूर्वम् “आज्ञां ददतु” इति।

The jewels of cultured conduct: announce yourself to an elder with अभिवादये plus your name; bless a junior with आयुष्मान् भव (to a woman: आयुष्मती भव), शुभं भवतु, or the ancient स्वस्ति; thank lightly with धन्यवादः and deeply with अनुगृहीतोऽस्मि (‘I stand favoured’); and before leaving a respected person, ask leave — आज्ञां ददतु. Notice also भवतां कृपया (‘by your grace’), the modest way to report one's own well-being.

सुभाषितम् · Verse of the day

अभिवादनशीलस्य नित्यं वृद्धोपसेविनः। चत्वारि तस्य वर्धन्ते आयुर्विद्या यशो बलम्॥

अर्थः — यः नित्यम् अभिवादनशीलः वृद्धानां सेवकश्च, तस्य चत्वारि वर्धन्ते — आयुः, विद्या, यशः, बलं च। (मनुस्मृतिः)

For one who habitually honours elders and serves the aged, four things increase: lifespan, learning, fame, and strength (Manusmṛti 2.121). The very verse behind the custom of अभिवादनम् you just practised.

महता उपकारेण कृतज्ञतां गभीरं वक्तुं किं वचनम्? Someone has done you a great favour. The deeper thanks?

योजयतु — कः कस्मै? Match speaker and phrase.

चत्वारि तस्य वर्धन्ते आयुर्विद्या यशो ________॥ Complete the four growing things.

वाक्यव्यवहारः · Use it

गृहे ज्येष्ठं प्रति अद्य “अभिवादये” इति वदतु — उत्तरं श्रुत्वा आनन्दं पश्यतु! ततः एकं लघुसंवादं रचयतु यस्मिन् अभिवादनम्, आशीर्वादः, कृतज्ञता, आज्ञाग्रहणं च चत्वारि अपि भवन्ति।

Today, greet an elder at home with अभिवादये and watch their delight. Then script a short visit-scene that includes all four moves: the respectful greeting, the blessing, the thanks, and asking leave to go.
