Guru, I have memorised a verse. Would you like to hear it?
Certainly, recite it.
Speak the truth, speak what is kind; do not speak a truth unkindly…
Bravo, bravo! Excellent pronunciation!
Next week there's a verse-recitation contest at school. I'm going to take part.
An excellent decision. Practise daily. In short — victory comes only by practice.
So be it. I will study every evening.
Good. My blessing is with you.
Explanation
साधु साधु! is the classic exclamation of applause — you will hear it in any Sanskrit gathering. किं बहुना literally asks ‘what is the use of (saying) much?’ and works like English ‘in short’ or ‘long story short’, introducing your main point. तथैव अस्तु — ‘let it be exactly so’ — is whole-hearted agreement, one step warmer than plain अस्तु.
Verse of the day
Speak the truth, speak what is pleasing; do not speak a truth that wounds, nor a pleasing lie — this is the eternal dharma (Manusmṛti 4.138). Notice ब्रूयात्, the optative ‘one should speak’, four times — a beautiful pattern to memorise.
