Story 3: The blue jackal

तृतीया कथा — कर्मणि प्रयोगेण इति-शब्देन च कथनम्।

A classic Pañcatantra tale, told with passives and इति.

कथा — नीलः शृगालः
 कथाकारः —  एकः क्षुधितः शृगालः रात्रौ ग्रामं प्रविष्टवान्। ग्रामस्य कुक्कुराः तम् अन्वधावन्। 
A hungry jackal entered a village at night. The village dogs chased him.  
 कथाकारः —  भीतः शृगालः रजकस्य गृहं प्राविशत्। तत्र एकस्मिन् पात्रे नीलः वर्णः आसीत्। सः तस्मिन् अपतत्, नीलः च अभवत्। 
Terrified, the jackal ran into a washerman's house. There in a vat was blue dye. He fell into it and turned blue.  
 पशवः —  अयं कः? ईदृशः पशुः कुत्रापि न दृश्यते! 
Who is this? Such an animal is seen nowhere!  
 शृगालः —  अहं देवेन प्रेषितः वनस्य राजा! 
I am the king of the forest, sent by God!  
 कथाकारः —  ततः सर्वे पशवः तम् असेवन्त। एकस्यां रात्रौ अन्ये शृगालाः उच्चैः ध्वनिम् अकुर्वन् — नीलः शृगालः अपि स्वभावात् उच्चैः ध्वनिम् अकरोत्। 
So all the animals served him. One night the other jackals howled — and the blue jackal, true to his nature, howled too.  
 कथाकारः —  “अयं तु शृगालः एव!” इति सर्वे अजानन्। क्रुद्धाः पशवः तम् अधावन्, सः च वनात् पलायितः। 
‘But this is just a jackal!’ — everyone realised. The angry animals chased him, and he fled from the forest.  

विवरणम् · Explanation

कथायां नूतनाभ्यासाः मिलन्ति — कर्मणि रूपम् (“ईदृशः पशुः न दृश्यते”), इति-कथनम् (“अयं तु शृगालः एव!” इति सर्वे अजानन्), कृदन्ताः च (भीतः, प्रेषितः, क्रुद्धाः)। नीतिः — स्वभावः चिरं न गूह्यते।

This story braids your new tools together: a passive (न दृश्यते), reported realisation with इति, and past participles as adjectives (भीतः, प्रेषितः, क्रुद्धाः). The moral itself is a passive: स्वभावः चिरं न गूह्यते — one's true nature cannot stay hidden for long.

पुनःकथनार्थं क्रिया-कङ्कालः — प्रविष्टवान् → अन्वधावन् → अपतत् → अभवत् → असेवन्त → अकरोत् → अजानन्। एतेषां क्रमेण कथां पुनः रचयतु।

Your verb skeleton for retelling: प्रविष्टवान् → अन्वधावन् → अपतत् → अभवत् → असेवन्त → अकरोत् → अजानन्. Rebuild the whole story along this chain.

Retell the story in the jackal's own voice, first person: अहं क्षुधितः ग्रामम् अगच्छम्… Keep the animals' exclamation as a quote with इति. Switching narrator is the level's most powerful retelling drill.
