इति-शब्देन प्रश्नाः विचाराः नामानि च — “शान्तिपुरम्” इति उच्यते।

Use इति to report questions, frame thoughts, and give names.

ग्रामे संवादः
 पथिकः —  भोः, एषः ग्रामः किम् इति उच्यते? 
Sir, what is this village called?  
 ग्रामिकः —  एषः “शान्तिपुरम्” इति उच्यते। 
It is called ‘Śāntipuram’.  
 पथिकः —  अत्र विद्यालयः अस्ति वा इति पृच्छामि। 
I am asking whether there is a school here.  
 ग्रामिकः —  अस्ति। “ज्ञानमन्दिरम्” इति तस्य नाम। सर्वे बालकाः तत्र पठन्ति। 
There is. Its name is ‘Jñānamandiram’. All the children study there.  
 पथिकः —  एषः ग्रामः सुन्दरः इति अहं मन्ये! 
I think this village is beautiful!  

विवरणम् · Explanation

इति-शब्दः न केवलं वचनस्य — प्रश्नस्य अपि: “अस्ति वा” इति पृच्छति। विचारस्य अपि: “एषः सुन्दरः” इति मन्ये, “किं करोमि” इति चिन्तयति। प्रश्नः अपि यथोक्तः तिष्ठति।

इति closes more than statements. Questions: अस्ति वा इति पृच्छति (asks whether it's there). Thoughts: इति मन्ये (I think that…), इति चिन्तयति (wonders/thinks). As before, the inner words stay in their original direct form.

नामकथने अपि इति — एषः ग्रामः “शान्तिपुरम्” इति उच्यते। मम मित्रं “गोपालः” इति ज्ञायते। अत्र पूर्वपाठयोः कर्मणि रूपे (उच्यते, ज्ञायते) इति-शब्देन सह मिलित्वा कार्यं कुरुतः।

And इति gives names: X इति उच्यते = is called X; X इति ज्ञायते = is known as X. Notice how the passives from lessons 8-9 team up with इति here — two tools you own, now working together.
