The passive voice II: is seen, is heard, is known

नित्यजीवने कर्मणि रूपाणि — चन्द्रः दृश्यते, घण्टा श्रूयते, न ज्ञायते।

The everyday passives: दृश्यते, श्रूयते, ज्ञायते — and the handy न ज्ञायते.

सायङ्काले गृहोपरि संवादः
 पिता —  पुत्र, आकाशे किं दृश्यते? 
Son, what can be seen in the sky?  
 पुत्रः —  चन्द्रः दृश्यते। ताराः अपि दृश्यन्ते। 
The moon is visible. The stars are visible too.  
 पिता —  किं श्रूयते? 
What can be heard?  
 पुत्रः —  मन्दिरस्य घण्टा श्रूयते। भक्तानां गीतानि अपि श्रूयन्ते। 
The temple bell is heard. The devotees' songs are heard too.  
 पिता —  एषः नूतनः ध्वनिः कस्य? 
And whose is this new sound?  
 पुत्रः —  न ज्ञायते! 
No idea! (It is not known.)  

विवरणम् · Explanation

दृश्यते = “is seen / दृष्टिगोचरं भवति”। श्रूयते = “is heard”। ज्ञायते = “is known”। एतानि रूपाणि नित्यभाषणे अतीव उपयुक्तानि — कर्तारं विना अपि वाक्यं पूर्णं भवति: “किं दृश्यते?” “किं श्रूयते?”

दृश्यते (is seen), श्रूयते (is heard), ज्ञायते (is known) are among the most used words in spoken Sanskrit — they let you drop the doer entirely: किं दृश्यते? = what's visible? किं श्रूयते? = what's that I hear / what's the news?

कर्म बहुवचने चेत् क्रियापदम् अपि बहुवचने — चन्द्रः दृश्यते, परन्तु ताराः दृश्यन्ते; गीतं श्रूयते, गीतानि श्रूयन्ते। “न ज्ञायते” इति उत्तरं स्मरतु — “I don't know” इति अर्थे सर्वत्र चलति।

The verb agrees with the surfaced object: singular दृश्यते, plural दृश्यन्ते (ताराः दृश्यन्ते). And keep न ज्ञायते in your pocket — it is the standard conversational ‘don't know’.

अधुना नेत्रे पिधाय क्षणं तिष्ठतु। ततः वदतु — किं किं श्रूयते? नेत्रे उद्घाट्य वदतु — किं किं दृश्यते? पञ्च वाक्यानि न्यूनातिन्यूनं वदतु, एकवचनं बहुवचनं च उभयं योजयतु।

Close your eyes for a moment and report what you hear (किं श्रूयते?), then open them and report what you see (किं दृश्यते?). At least five sentences, mixing singular दृश्यते/श्रूयते and plural दृश्यन्ते/श्रूयन्ते.
