All, other, one, both: pronominal adjectives

सर्व-अन्य-एक-उभ-शब्दानां प्रयोगः।

Use सर्व, अन्य, एक and उभ — adjectives that decline like pronouns.

 शिक्षकः —  सर्वे छात्राः आगतवन्तः वा? 
Have all the students come?  
 छात्रः —  न। एकः छात्रः न आगतवान्। अन्ये सर्वे अत्र सन्ति। 
No. One student has not come. All the others are here.  
 शिक्षकः —  उभौ भ्रातरौ रामः श्यामः च कुत्र? 
Where are both brothers, Rāma and Śyāma?  
 छात्रः —  उभौ क्रीडाङ्गणे स्तः। एके छात्राः तत्र क्रीडन्ति, अन्ये अत्र पठन्ति। 
Both are on the playground. Some students play there, others read here.  
 शिक्षकः —  सर्वं ज्ञातम्। सर्वे पुस्तकानि उद्घाटयन्तु। 
All understood. Everyone open your books.  

विवरणम् · Explanation

सर्व, अन्य, एक — एतानि विशेषणानि सर्वनाम इव चलन्ति। पुंलिङ्गे बहुवचने “ए” भवति — सर्वे बालकाः (न तु “सर्वाः”), अन्ये जनाः, एके छात्राः। नपुंसके अन्य-शब्दस्य रूपम् “अन्यत्” — अन्यत् फलम्।

सर्व (all), अन्य (other), एक (one/some) decline like pronouns, not like ordinary adjectives. So masculine plural is -ए: सर्वे बालकाः (never सर्वाः for masculine), अन्ये, एके. And the neuter of अन्य is अन्यत् — like तत्: अन्यत् फलम् = another fruit.

उभ-शब्दः केवलं द्विवचने भवति — उभौ बालकौ, उभे बालिके, उभे फले, उभयोः हस्तयोः। बहुवचने “एके … अन्ये …” इति युगलं “some … others …” इति अर्थं ददाति।

उभ (both) exists only in the dual: उभौ बालकौ (m.), उभे बालिके (f.), उभे फले (n.), उभयोः (of both). And the pair एके … अन्ये … means ‘some … others …’: एके पठन्ति, अन्ये क्रीडन्ति.
