Describing things: adjectives that agree

विशेषणं विशेष्यस्य लिङ्गं वचनं विभक्तिं च अनुसरति।

Adjectives copy the gender, number and case of their noun.

 रामः —  सीते, पश्य! एषः उन्नतः वृक्षः कः? 
Sītā, look! What is this tall tree?  
 सीता —  एषः आम्रवृक्षः। अस्मिन् वृक्षे मधुराणि फलानि सन्ति। 
This is a mango tree. There are sweet fruits on this tree.  
 रामः —  तत्र एका सुन्दरी बालिका श्वेतानि पुष्पाणि चिनोति। 
There a beautiful girl is picking white flowers.  
 सीता —  सा रक्तं पुष्पम् अपि इच्छति। रक्तानि पुष्पाणि सुन्दराणि भवन्ति। 
She wants a red flower too. Red flowers are beautiful.  
 रामः —  सत्यम्। इदम् उद्यानं रमणीयम् अस्ति। 
True. This garden is delightful.  

विवरणम् · Explanation

“उन्नतः” “मधुरम्” “सुन्दरी” — एतानि विशेषणानि। विशेषणं वस्तुनः गुणं वदति। विशेषणं विशेष्यस्य लिङ्गम् अनुसरति — उन्नतः वृक्षः, उन्नता लता, उन्नतं गृहम्। वचनम् अपि अनुसरति — मधुरं फलम्, मधुराणि फलानि।

Words like उन्नतः (tall), मधुरम् (sweet), सुन्दरी (beautiful) are adjectives (विशेषणम्). An adjective tells a quality of its noun (विशेष्यम्) — and it must copy the noun's gender: उन्नतः वृक्षः (m.), उन्नता लता (f.), उन्नतं गृहम् (n.) — and its number: मधुरं फलम्, मधुराणि फलानि.

विभक्तिः अपि समाना भवति। अहम् उन्नतं वृक्षं पश्यामि। बालिका उन्नतस्य वृक्षस्य अधः तिष्ठति। केषुचित् विशेषणेषु स्त्रीलिङ्गे ई-कारः भवति — सुन्दरः बालकः, सुन्दरी बालिका।

The case must match too: अहम् उन्नतं वृक्षं पश्यामि (accusative pair), उन्नतस्य वृक्षस्य अधः (genitive pair). Some adjectives take -ई in the feminine: सुन्दरः बालकः but सुन्दरी बालिका. Most simply take -आ: उन्नता, मधुरा, रक्ता.
