Who and what — first question words

कः, का, किम् इति प्रश्नाः उत्तराणि च।

Ask and answer who-questions and what-questions.

विवरणम् · Explanation

प्रश्ने पुरुषविषये “कः”, स्त्रीविषये “का”, वस्तुविषये “किम्” इति भवति। उत्तरे प्रश्नपदस्य स्थाने नाम आगच्छति — “कः क्रीडति? रामः क्रीडति।”

The question word matches the gender of what you ask about: कः for a male, का for a female, किम् for a thing. To answer, simply replace the question word with the name: कः क्रीडति? → रामः क्रीडति. Everything else stays in place.

“अत्र” इति “here”, “तत्र” इति “there”। एते शब्दाः वाक्ये कुत्रापि भवन्ति।

Two handy place words appear here: अत्र “here” and तत्र “there”. Note also the verb endings you keep meeting: -ति for he/she (क्रीडति, गायति, पिबति) and -आमि for I (पिबामि).

अधुना भवान्/भवती गृहं पश्यतु। “कः …ति? का …ति? किम् अस्ति?” इति त्रीन् प्रश्नान् रचयतु, उत्तराणि च वदतु।

Look around your home and make three question–answer pairs aloud: one with कः, one with का, one with किम् — e.g. कः खादति? पिता खादति।
