एषः कः? एषा का?
He, she, this and that — pronouns in action

सः, सा, तत्, एषः, एषा, एतत् — सर्वनामपदानि।

 सीता —  एषा मम भगिनी ललिता। सा अध्यापिका। 
This is my sister Lalitā. She is a teacher.  
 रामः —  एतत् किम्? 
What is this?  
 सीता —  एतत् मम पुस्तकम्। 
This is my book.  
 रामः —  तत् किम्? 
What is that?  
 सीता —  तत् मम गृहम्। 
That is my house.  

विवरणम् · Explanation

समीपे — एषः (पुरुषः), एषा (स्त्री), एतत् (वस्तु)। दूरे — सः, सा, तत्। “एषः मम भ्राता” — समीपे अस्ति। “तत् मम गृहम्” — दूरे अस्ति।

For someone or something near you, use एषः (m.), एषा (f.), एतत् (n.). For someone farther away, use सः “he”, सा “she”, तत् “that thing”. The pronoun must match the gender of the person or thing.

“अहम्” इति वक्ता। “त्वम्” इति मित्रं प्रति। “भवान्/भवती” इति आदरेण।

You already know अहम् “I”. For “you”, त्वम् is the informal word (friends, children); भवान्/भवती is the polite form you have been using. All of these work the same way in sentences.

समीपे एका स्त्री अस्ति। किं वदति? A woman is right here. Which pronoun introduces her?

________ मम गृहम्। (दूरे अस्ति) That (far away) is my house.

योजयतु। Match pronoun to meaning.

वाक्यं रचयतु — “This is my brother.” Arrange the words.

“मित्रम्” इति शब्दः — “एतत् मम मित्रम्” इति किमर्थम्? Why do we say एतत् मम मित्रम् even for a person?

वाक्यव्यवहारः · Use it

अधुना भवान्/भवती चित्रं वा कुटुम्बं वा पश्यतु। “एषः मम …। एषा मम …। एतत् मम …।” इति पञ्च वाक्यानि वदतु।

Look at a family photo or around your room. Introduce five people or things aloud: एषः मम…, एषा मम…, एतत् मम…, and for far-away ones सः / सा / तत्.
