वैदिकी लौकिकी च
Vedic and Classical Sanskrit

छन्दसीति विधयः, स्वरत्रयम्, वेदे विद्यमानानि लौकिके लुप्तानि रूपाणि, संहितापाठः पदपाठश्च।

What छन्दसि meant all along, the three pitch accents, the forms Classical Sanskrit dropped, and the padapāṭha that undoes every sandhi for you.

स्मरणम् · You already know this

Fourteen levels are behind you. You have finished the Laghu Siddhānta Kaumudī and you can construe any classical sentence handed to you — open Kālidāsa and the meaning arrives word by word. Now open the first maṇḍala of the Ṛgveda and you stall on page one. Same script, same letters, but there are strokes above and below the syllables; an instrumental plural देवेभिः where you expect देवैः; an infinitive एतवै where you expect एतुम्. Nothing has gone wrong with your grammar. This is वैदिकी भाषा, the older layer of the language — and Pāṇini describes it too. You have simply never been shown where he does it.

सूत्राणि · The sūtras

छन्दसि
लसक 1
यत्र सूत्रे “छन्दसि” (तथा “मन्त्रे”, “निगमे”, “ब्राह्मणे”) इति पदं श्रूयते अनुवर्तते वा, सः विधिः वेदविषयः एव — न लौकिकभाषायाम्। यत्र च “भाषायाम्” इति, सः लौकिकविषयः।
Wherever a sūtra says छन्दसि — or मन्त्रे, निगमे, ब्राह्मणे — the rule holds for Vedic only. Where it says भाषायाम्, it holds for the spoken, classical language. Pāṇini is describing two layers at once and labelling every rule that belongs to one of them.

Since Level 7 you have been reading sūtras out of the Aṣṭādhyāyī — but only the ones that govern the classical language. Close to a hundred sūtras say छन्दसि outright (बहुलं छन्दसि and its like), and anuvṛtti carries the word into many more; this course has not shown you a single one of them, because they did not apply to what you were learning. That was correct. But those rules are not noise. Every छन्दसि is a door, and you have walked past all of them. The full Siddhānta Kaumudī ends with two further sections, वैदिकीप्रक्रिया and स्वरप्रक्रिया; the Laghu Siddhānta Kaumudī you just finished stops before both. That is precisely why you have never read them.

उच्चैरुदात्तः
लसक 2 · अष्टा॰ 1.2.29 ↗
उच्चैः उच्चार्यमाणः अच् उदात्तसंज्ञः भवति।
A vowel uttered at a high pitch is called udātta.
नीचैरनुदात्तः
लसक 3 · अष्टा॰ 1.2.30 ↗
नीचैः उच्चार्यमाणः अच् अनुदात्तसंज्ञः भवति।
A vowel uttered at a low pitch is called anudātta.
समाहारः स्वरितः
लसक 4 · अष्टा॰ 1.2.31 ↗
उदात्तानुदात्तयोः समाहारः — एकस्मिन् एव अचि उभयोः मेलनम् — स्वरितसंज्ञः भवति।
Both together in a single vowel — the high falling into the low — is called svarita. Three terms, and Pāṇini defines them before he uses them anywhere.

In Vedic the pitch distinguishes meaning, so the tradition preserved it in writing. In the usual Ṛgveda convention the udātta is left unmarked, the anudātta carries a horizontal stroke below the syllable, and the svarita a vertical stroke above. Classical texts — kāvya, śāstra, purāṇa — are simply not printed with these marks. The Mahābhāṣya's Paspaśāhnika warns that a mantra wrong in accent or in sound does not say what it means, and cites इन्द्रशत्रुः, where the accent alone decides which compound you have said.

Leṭ, the subjunctive, stands in the sense of liṅ — and छन्दसि carries down from the previous sūtra, so it is Vedic only. It is one of three things the classical language let go: the subjunctive; the instrumental plural in -भिः standing beside -ऐः; and a whole family of infinitives where classical keeps only -तुम्.

अतो भिस ऐस् (7.1.9) turns भिस् into ऐस् after a short a — देवैः. In the Veda that substitution is optional, so बहुवचने झल्येत् gives its e and you get देवेभिः — formed exactly like देवेभ्यः and देवेषु, which you already derive without thinking. The form is not strange; only the rule that outranked it is missing. Likewise लेट् gives भवाति and करत् where classical would say भवेत् or भवतु, and the Vedic infinitives एतवै, कर्तोः, पिबध्यै mean simply एतुम्, कर्तुम्, पातुम्.

The closest proximity of sounds is what the word saṃhitā names — which is why the saṃhitā recitation has every sandhi in place. The same verse is transmitted twice over: continuous in the saṃhitā-pāṭha, and in the pada-pāṭha, where the reciter deliberately undoes the sandhi and gives each word separately, splitting compounds with an avagraha. The Ṛgveda's pada-pāṭha is traditionally ascribed to Śākalya, whom Pāṇini himself names.

This is the most useful thing in the chapter. In Level 9 you derived sandhi rule by rule; the pada-pāṭha is a finished answer key for every one of those rules, prepared some twenty-five centuries ago. You never have to guess where a word boundary falls or which rule welded two words together, because the tradition has already pulled them apart. Read Vedic with the pada-pāṭha open beside the text, always.

वाक्यव्यवहारः · Use it

One last task. Get a Ṛgveda edition printed with the accent marks and with the pada-pāṭha beside the saṃhitā text, and take the very first hymn, अग्निमीळे पुरोहितम्. Read the saṃhitā line aloud with its pitches. Then read the pada line. Then rebuild every sandhi yourself from the separated words, exactly as you did in Level 9, and let the pada-pāṭha mark your work. Finally go back and count the strokes above and below the syllables, and listen to what they do. One hymn read this way and the door is open; the rest is practice. Fourteen levels taught you to construe any sentence in the classical language. This one told you what the other half of the library looks like — and that Pāṇini had been describing it all along, in the lines you were skipping.
