Level 10 · Lesson 7 उकारान्ताः — गुरु-भानू
Stems in -u: गुरु and भानु
गुरवः गुरुणा गुरवे गुरोः गुरौ — हरिवत् प्रक्रिया उकारान्तेषु।
The u-stems decline exactly like हरि: same ghi rules, new vowel — गुरवः, गुरवे, गुरोः, गुरौ.
स्मरणम् · You already know this
“गुरवे नमः” “भानुः उदेति” “साधो!” — उकारान्ताः अपि भवतः सुपरिचिताः। शुभवार्ता — नूतनं सूत्रं किमपि नास्ति! हरिशब्दे यानि सूत्राणि, तानि एव अत्र — इकारस्य स्थाने उकारः इति एव भेदः।
Good news: this lesson introduces zero new sūtras. Every rule you learnt for हरि applies unchanged to u-stems — only the vowel differs. Guṇa of u is o, and its ac-split is av instead of ay.
सूत्राणि · The sūtras (revisited)
उकारस्य गुणः ओकारः; ओकारस्य अचि परे “एचोऽयवायावः” (6.1.78) इति अव्-आदेशः। अतः हरयः इव गुरवः, भानवः, साधवः।
The guṇa of u is o, and before a vowel o splits into av (एचोऽयवायावः 6.1.78). So where i-stems gave हरयः, u-stems give गुरवः, भानवः, साधवः.
