Capstone II: narrate, discuss, explain — finishing Arc A

द्वितीयं परीक्षणम् — कथनं, मतचर्चा, विवरणं च; अर्कस्य समापनम्।

The second assessment: storytelling, opinion, explanation — and the close of Arc A.

अन्तिमः आदर्शसंवादः
 परीक्षकः —  श्रद्धे, का अपि लघुकथा कथ्यताम्। 
Śraddhā, please tell some short story.  
 श्रद्धा —  अस्तु। एकः काकः तृषितः आसीत्। सः घटे अल्पं जलं दृष्ट्वा पाषाणान् एकैकशः अक्षिपत्। जलम् उपरि आगतम्, सः च अपिबत्। उद्यमेन हि सिध्यन्ति कार्याणि! 
Sure. A crow was thirsty. Seeing a little water in a pot, he dropped in stones one by one. The water rose, and he drank. Deeds succeed by effort!  
 परीक्षकः —  साधु — सुभाषितेन सह उपसंहारः! इदानीं मतचर्चा — गृहपाठः आवश्यकः वा? 
Excellent — concluded with a subhāṣita! Now for opinion — is homework necessary?  
 श्रद्धा —  मम मतेन आवश्यकः, यतः अभ्यासेन एव पाठः स्थिरः भवति। भवतु नाम अधिकः भारः न युक्तः, तथापि मितः गृहपाठः हितकरः एव। 
In my opinion yes, because only practice makes a lesson stick. Granted, an excessive load is wrong; even so, homework in measure is beneficial.  
 परीक्षकः —  अन्तिमः प्रश्नः — ‘सन्धिः’ इति किम्? सरलतया विवृणोतु। 
Last question — what is sandhi? Explain it simply.  
 श्रद्धा —  द्वयोः शब्दयोः मेलने यः ध्वनिपरिवर्तनः भवति सः सन्धिः। यथा — ‘नमः’ + ‘ते’ इति ‘नमस्ते’ भवति। 
Sandhi is the sound change that happens when two words meet. For example, namaḥ plus te becomes namaste.  
 परीक्षकः —  साधु साधु! भवती अधुना संस्कृतेन कथयति, चर्चयति, विवृणोति च। प्रथमः अर्कः समाप्तः — अभिनन्दनम्! 
Bravo! You can now narrate, discuss, and explain in Sanskrit. Arc One is complete — congratulations!  

विवरणम् · Explanation

आत्मपरीक्षणसूची (द्वितीयः भागः) — ५. अहं षड्वाक्यात्मिकां कथाम् आरम्भ-मध्य-अन्तैः सह कथयितुं शक्नोमि वा? ६. ‘मम मतेन… यतः…’ इति मतं समर्थयितुं शक्नोमि वा? ७. ‘भवतु नाम, तथापि…’ इति विपक्षम् अपि मन्तुं शक्नोमि वा? ८. किमपि सरलं तत्त्वं सोदाहरणं विवरीतुं शक्नोमि वा? सर्वत्र ‘आम्’ चेत् — भवान् भवती वा B1-स्तरं प्राप्तवान् प्राप्तवती वा!

Self-check, part two: (5) Can I tell a six-sentence story with a beginning, middle, and end? (6) Can I state and support an opinion with मम मतेन… यतः…? (7) Can I concede a point with भवतु नाम, तथापि…? (8) Can I explain a simple concept with an example, as Śraddhā explained sandhi? Four yeses here, plus four from lesson 19, equal B1-level spoken Sanskrit: you can narrate, discuss, ask, and explain.

अग्रे किम्? सप्तमे स्तरे वयं पृच्छामः — “गच्छामि इति वदसि — किमर्थं ‘गच्छामि’ इति रूपम्?” व्यवहारात् विश्लेषणं प्रति, भाषणात् पाणिनिं प्रति — एषा यात्रा अधुना आरभते!

सुभाषितम् · Verse of the day

पुस्तकस्था तु या विद्या परहस्तगतं धनम्। कार्यकाले समुत्पन्ने न सा विद्या न तद्धनम्॥

अर्थः — पुस्तके एव स्थिता विद्या परहस्तगतं धनम् इव — कार्यकाले उपस्थिते न सा विद्या उपयुज्यते, न तत् धनम्। अतः एव एतत् परीक्षणम् — विद्या जिह्वायां भवतु, न केवलं पुस्तके!

Knowledge left in the book is like money in another's hands: when the moment of need arrives, neither is yours to use. That is why this capstone exists — your Sanskrit must live on your tongue, not only on the page.
