 ग्राहकः —  नमस्ते। एकस्य कदलीफलस्य मूल्यं कियत्? 
Hello. How much is one banana?  
 विक्रेता —  पञ्च रूप्यकाणि महोदय। 
Five rupees, sir.  
 ग्राहकः —  द्वादश फलानि ददातु। आम्रफलस्य मूल्यं कियत्? 
Give me twelve. And how much is a mango?  
 विक्रेता —  एकस्य त्रिंशत् रूप्यकाणि। त्रीणि नीयन्ते चेत् नवतिः। 
Thirty rupees each. If you take three, ninety.  
 ग्राहकः —  त्रीणि ददातु। सर्वं मिलित्वा कियत्? 
Give me three. How much all together?  
 विक्रेता —  षष्टिः च नवतिः च — शतं पञ्चाशत् च रूप्यकाणि। 
Sixty plus ninety — one hundred and fifty rupees.  
 ग्राहकः —  किञ्चित् न्यूनं करोतु! 
Bring it down a little!  
 विक्रेता —  भवतु — चत्वारिंशदधिकं शतं ददातु। भवान् नित्यग्राहकः खलु! 
Alright — make it one hundred and forty. You're a regular, after all!  

विवरणम् · Explanation

दशकाः — विंशतिः २०, त्रिंशत् ३०, चत्वारिंशत् ४०, पञ्चाशत् ५०, षष्टिः ६०, सप्ततिः ७०, अशीतिः ८०, नवतिः ९०। ततः शतम् १००, सहस्रम् १०००, लक्षम्, कोटिः च। मध्यसंख्याः योगेन — पञ्चविंशतिः २५, चत्वारिंशदधिकं शतम् १४०।

Learn the tens as a chant: विंशतिः, त्रिंशत्, चत्वारिंशत्, पञ्चाशत्, षष्टिः, सप्ततिः, अशीतिः, नवतिः — then शतम् (100), सहस्रम् (1,000), लक्षम् (100,000), कोटिः (ten million). In-between numbers are built by combination: पञ्च + विंशतिः → पञ्चविंशतिः (25); 140 is चत्वारिंशत्-अधिकं शतम्, ‘a hundred increased by forty’ — or simply शतं चत्वारिंशत् च in casual speech.

मूल्यपृच्छा — “अस्य मूल्यं कियत्?” उत्तरम् — “दश रूप्यकाणि।” “सर्वं मिलित्वा कियत्?” इति योगफलस्य पृच्छा।

To ask a price: अस्य मूल्यं कियत्? The answer puts the amount with रूप्यकाणि (rupees). सर्वं मिलित्वा कियत्? — ‘how much all together?’ — is your totalling question.

सुभाषितम् · Verse of the day

क्षणशः कणशश्चैव विद्यामर्थं च साधयेत्। क्षणत्यागे कुतो विद्या कणत्यागे कुतो धनम्॥

अर्थः — क्षणं क्षणं विद्यां, कणं कणं धनं च साधयेत्। क्षणस्य त्यागे विद्या कुतः, कणस्य त्यागे धनं कुतः?

Win knowledge moment by moment and wealth grain by grain: if you squander moments, whence knowledge? If you squander grains, whence wealth? A counting-house verse — every unit matters.

वाक्यव्यवहारः · Use it

स्वगृहस्य पञ्च वस्तूनि चित्वा प्रत्येकस्य मूल्यं संस्कृतेन वदतु — “अस्य मूल्यं … रूप्यकाणि” इति। ततः आपणसंवादम् अभिनयतु — मूल्यं पृच्छतु, न्यूनं याचतां, योगं च गणयतु।

Pick five objects at home and state each price aloud in Sanskrit. Then role-play a market scene: ask prices, bargain with किञ्चित् न्यूनं करोतु, and total the bill — doing arithmetic aloud in Sanskrit cements the numbers like nothing else.
